The End to Debate on Conditional Security - Bible Teaching #16
In this article we are going to look at a very heavily fought section of the Bible, Hebrews chapter 10. We will also be looking at what sins the blood of Jesus covers according to the Bible. Then examining to see if there are any examples of this particular concept being followed in the New Testament. I am hoping that this will clear up misconceptions and shoot down all arguments that have risen against. Taking every thought captive to obedience to Christ.
As always, grab your Bible, pray for discernment and check my work. May the Spirit of Truth guide you into all Truth through the beautifully True Word of God.
Let’s break down Hebrews 10.
The key to understanding this passage of, Hebrews 10, is understanding the context of the sacrificial system. According to Numbers 15:22-31, there are only sacrifices at the Temple for sins committed in ignorance. Anyone who sins presumptuously or willfully must be cut off from the people. Those animal sacrifices were replaced by the sacrifice of Jesus. So the same format is followed. The whole idea of the passage of Hebrews 10:1-31 is that instead of needing numerous animal sacrifices for sins committed in ignorance. He covers it all. In the Old Covenant, sacrifices were only for ignorant sin or sin that we have repented of, those who commit willful sin are cut off from the people. That parallels to Hebrews 10:26.
Also, when the writer says "we" he includes himself. If the writer sins willfully the the same penalty is for him. It should be self evident, that the writer of Hebrews in the Bible, is a born again believer, right?
Always remember, Jesus said to 2 different people, "Go sin no more." Of course you can only stop doing sins that you know that you are committing. That statement does not apply to sins committed in ignorance. Ignorant sin His blood covers, willful sin breaks the Covenant or contract. Jesus' blood does not cover willful sins unless you stop committing them. That is repentance. Without repentance, there is no salvation.
This brings me to my next point.
2 Peter 1:9
Never mentions future sins but says we are cleansed from past sins. All it says is that we are cleansed from our old sins.
2 Corinthians 7:10
This says that godly sorrow produces repentance unto salvation. So we must repent of our sins before we can be forgiven.
Luke 24:47
This passage uses the same terminology in the Greek, repentance unto forgiveness. A primary preposition, a transition into something.
There is also a parallel drawn in how John the Baptist came before Christ. To bring people to repentance so they can have their sins forgiven through Christ. Salvation came after repentance.
Another topic that the Lord has recently given me insight on. Actual examples of individuals losing their salvation in the New Testament.
1 Cotinthians 5
Notice, 1 willful sin was committed. He was delivered to Satan, meaning he was not currently in Satan’s possession. Paul also mentions him going back under Gods judgement, as in the world, after being separated from the Church. A sheep that was removed from the flock for willful sin.
1 Timothy 1:19-20
Notice their (faith), so they had faith. That faith suffered shipwreck, you can not shipwreck a boat that is not, existing, and working, and afloat. Same language, delivered to Satan. They were not currently in Satan's kingdom.
Colossians 2:19
Not holding fast the head. Look that term up, it presupposed that you have held it. Who is connected to and holding the head according to that verse? You guessed it, the body of Christ. So they were part of the body, connected to the head and did not continue being attached to it. But you can not become unattached according to OSAS doctrine.
2 Timothy 2:17-19
Strayed concerning the truth. Like a sheep goes astray. Literally the Greek word for sin or missing the mark. Overthrowing the faith of some. So this faith existed and was functioning. The word used is pistis, same word that we are saved by. As James said, "Brethren, if anyone among you wanders from the truth, and someone turns him back, let him know that he who turns a sinner from the error of his way will save a soul from death and cover a multitude of sins." So, the one who strays becomes spiritually dead. As in the parable of the Prodigal Son. The father said that his son was dead but now he is alive, he was lost but now is found.
Galatians 5:4
I looked into this wording, yes the part talking about departing from Christ means this:
"abolish, cease, cumber, do away
From kata and argeo; to be (render) entirely idle (useless), literally or figuratively -- abolish, cease, cumber, deliver, destroy, do away, become (make) of no (none, without) effect, fail, loose, bring (come) to nought, put away (down), vanish away, make void."
Notice all verbs about a removal from what you once were. As Paul said previously, "Are you so foolish? Having begun in the Spirit, are you now being made perfect by the flesh?" These people previously had the Spirit! Then Paul tells them that if they become circumcised then they will become severed from Christ.
That was 5 examples that the Spirit led me to concerning New Testament examples of loss of salvation. I hope you see the heavy reality now. It can not get much more clear than that. Every sin will be judged. Believers will receive a stricter judgement because we know what is right. Teachers will receive an even harsher judgement because they have the greatest responsibility. Either leading God's sheep to Hell or to salvation. If the blind lead the blind, both will fall into the pit. I will be praying for the Spirit to go forth with this.
One more thing on this topic. Marriage is a reflection of the relationship between Christ and the Church. Did Christ say that you can never divorce your wife? Not at all! He said for no reason except for illicit sexual activity, porneia. Same with our relationship with Christ, we are united with Him in a spiritual union; as we are united with a spouse in a fleshly union. When we engage in physical sexual activity, other than proper sexual intercourse with our spouse, we meet grounds for divorce. Same with Christ, when we engage in spiritual sexual activity, other than faithfully obeying the laws of Christ, we meet grounds for spiritual divorce. When you unite to another master by willfully obeying that instead of Christ then you commit spiritual adultery. Which is a form of porneia or illicit sexual activity. As Paul said, "Do you not know that to whom you present yourselves slaves to obey, you are that one’s slaves whom you obey, whether of sin leading to death, or of obedience leading to righteousness?" If you are married to Christ and subject to Him and willfully disobey Him, thus willfully obeying another master; you have divorced yourself from Christ. No longer united. He is only your master as long as you submit to Him. A spiritual unity with Christ through righteousness. Where He literally puts His Holy Spirit inside of you. As a husband and wife have physical unity through sexual intercourse. Willful disobedience is spiritual porneia and will result in spiritual divorce from Christ.
As James said,
"You see then that a man is justified by works, and not by faith only."
So, you need to work, faith alone can not save you. As just believing that your spouse exists will not get you married, or keep a marriage. You are married to Christ. Do your part in the marriage Covenant.
May God grant you increase concerning this.
I am looking forward to hearing your thoughts and am willing to discuss any of these topics and more, in great detail. If you would like.
